BEWARE! Formatting for notifications broken since whatever update occurred.

  • I had a guest tell me about this, so I am passing this along so that others can correct it ASAP.
I would not have noticed since the duplicate email notifications that I have been receiving have looked perfectly fine.

If you are using notifications, go to: manage> Notifications, and look at the html & text versions, and make sure that your formatting is still as you intended. (My text version was formatted as intended, and my html version was one block of text)

After the guest replied to my notification, I noticed that the version that they had received had removed all the formatting, and turned it into a block of text.

So, I went to the notifications, and noticed that The "text" tab had retained all of it's formatting, but the "html" tab had removed it all.
Why is the version that I am getting still formatted correctly? No idea.
I have both the text & html check boxes checked.
My intended text version is exactly the same the intended html version. (no images, no html, just a few email variables)

I understand that we are not supposed to post problems here in the forum, but we desperately need a place to notify others as the system changes, and group source the solutions as things become broken, so that other checkfront users will be able to correct, or deal with problems when they arise.
For one thing, it would be helpful to know if others are having the same problems, and what their experiences were.

Hopefully this will be helpful for some to catch this problem before it is an embarrassing episode that goes noticed for a while.
  • We haven't removed any formatting from our notifications.  Not in this or any previous update.

Please remember when a customer replies to your email their e-mail client may pick the TEXT version of your email to reply to.

Some clients vary.  Gmail, or Mac Mail will include the HTML version, but other clients including mobile clients will pick the TEXT version.

The PREVIEW button in the notification will give you a good idea of what both the TEXT and HTML notifications will look like, but the HTML emails can look different depending on the end client.

We've spent a lot of time ensuring our notification emails look great in as many e-mail clients as possible.   Please send us a screen-shot if you have an example of an email that doesn't render well.

  • Ok, good points, but that is not it.

I would put the screen shots that I submitted with my support ticket here, but I have to upload them somewhere first, and I am too lazy. A way to upload images to this forum directly would be great.

To be clear: Formatting for html was lost on ALL of my notifications. (Specifically: Line returns missing completely) The text versions were NOT changed. (except the height of the body field seems to have a minimum height of 4 pages now (in Chrome anyway), but looks fine in preview, just takes a while to scroll down to the preview or updates buttons for the text tab)

I created the text versions to be exactly the same as the html versions.

I use no html script nor images, only simple URLs & a few email variables.
Both "html" & "text" boxes are checked for all my notifications in Checkfront.
They have been that way for more than a year, and whenever I go back to look at them, they are always formatted correctly. Until I looked last night after receiving that email from a guest with an un-formatted block of text. I had never seen that before, and wondered how on earth it would up that way. I finally figured it out by going to notifications in Checkfront.

The guest was offering me suggestions on formatting & html, that is what led me to look in notifications, and both the text & html versions of each notification.

Sure enough, it was the same as her email, all of the line returns were missing, making the html version one long string with only spaces between words.

It is impossible for me to know if it just happened to my account, or everyone's without a forum for these issues.

My assumption is that when the developer changes occurred to the editor, the formatting got lost.

If I never changed it for any of my notifications, but formatting was dropped from all html versions notifications while the text version remained the same, then how else would this be possible?

If someone else noticed this then post here.

  • I'll check with support and see if there is anything else we can find from the screen shots provided.  I can tell you've we've had no other reports of the formatting issues you reported.

Although we don't want customer booking receipts to be posted to the forum for privacy reasons, we'll see if there is a plugin available for our forum software that will allow screenshots to be uploaded where appropriate.

  • We've also had this formatting issue pop up in the last two weeks or so.  Specifically, the line returns are taken out and the bulk of the message comes as a large block of text (though links and bolded text remain.

The Paid or Reserved colored icons have also stopped appearing and replaced with simple bolded status text.

I've done a few test notifications to my email address and they are definitely different than before.
  • Thank you @wiscanoe!

See Jason, I am not totally insane! ...well not totally anyway.

Just look at the html tab in notifications, people.

If you are receiving duplicates as they get sent out, the formatting will look fine, so you may not know otherwise.
  • I forgot to mention that after going into each notification and adding the missing line returns, it went mostly back to normal.  Screenshots below are from two days ago.

Still looks strange with chunks of white background (http://awesomescreenshot.com/02c6twqfe - I assume this is just a result of using HTML) and the status color bars still don't appear: (http://awesomescreenshot.com/0646twde4)

This was the block of text noticed ~2 weeks ago: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0086tx769

  • Thank you @wiscanoe

I am getting the exact same thing, and didn't even notice.

    That element used to look like: <span style="color:#fff;background-color:#b24;text-align:center;padding:.5em 1em .5em 1em;display:block;width:8em;margin-bottom:.5em;font-weight:bold">Cancelled</span>

    But now looks like: <span>Cancelled</span>

That block of text you posted has a lot more line returns than mine did. Mine had NO line returns, for ANY of the notifications under the html tab. Again, the text tab had retained the line returns.
  • I don't even remember this, but I am happy to announce that inline styles, and a lot of html works in description boxes, and invoice forms now. Except for heading (H1), etc tags for font sizes.

    Thanks!
